RTOP Opens: Funny GirlAugust 12, 2019
She’s the greatest star, she is by far, and she wants you to know it! Funny Girl is a classic semi biographical musical depicting the rise to stardom of Fanny Brice, the iconic vaudeville and Ziegfeld star, and her tumultuous relationship with debonair gambler Nicky Arenstein. Funny Girl is playing August 15-25 at Regional Theatre of the Palouse.
This production marks the 55th anniversary of the original Broadway production back in 1964. Funny Girl was nominated for eight Tony Awards, and it launched the career of Barbra Streisand, who starred in the title role as Fanny Brice. The subsequent film adaptation, which premiered in 1968, also starred Streisand and earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. One of the songs from the score, “People”, was released as a pop single prior to the opening of the Broadway production and became a huge hit; it’s since become a standard in the Great American Songbook, and is one of Streisand’s signature songs. Regional Theatre of the Palouse is proud to continue the enduring legacy of this musical by presenting this production which boasts an iconic score by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill that also features the classics “I’m The Greatest Star”, “Don’t Rain On My Parade”, and Fanny Brice’s signature torch song, “My Man”.
The show is a memory play that starts with Fanny reflecting on how her career unfolded. We flash back to Fanny slowly but surely proving her talent and making her way to the top of show business: starting off in dingy music halls and ending up on Broadway working with the legendary Florenz Ziegfeld. Backstage at one of her shows, she meets Nicky Arnstein, a charming well-to-do gambler who, despite his womanizer persona, shows true affection for Fanny. Fanny falls madly in love with him as well. However, Nick’s ethics and work practices may not be what they seem, and Fanny must learn to balance her personal life with her professional life in the face of scandal, adversity, and truth. Based on the true relationship of Fanny Brice and Nicky Arnstein, Funny Girl is a musical that depicts a not-so-perfect love story, is a commentary on the price of loving unconditionally, and is a beautiful reminder that “people who need people are the luckiest people in the world”.
Funny Girl is a terrifically funny musical featuring many vaudeville style numbers that will be sure to leave the whole family entertained while also tugging on the heartstrings and leaving the audience thinking. Featuring out-of-town talent from New York City and Las Vegas secured from open call auditions that brought in hundreds of applicants, as well as local favorites, this production of Funny Girl will definitely be a show for the whole family to enjoy.
